Island lawyers’ fees “out of control” (Lead story in the JEP 14.05.2015)
Based on a report by a costs consultant, the story claims that on average, the rates levied by large Jersey firms – with partners in some firms charging between £495 and £625 an hour - make them comparable with those of the top City of London firms. For other Jersey firms the report states that those with five years’ post qualification experience are charged at between £285 and £350 per hour, with partners in such firms being charged at £375-£495 per hour.
Jersey’s Royal Court has a system of taxation of costs, where a successful party can recover fees from an unsuccessful party. By way of example, the recovery rate for cases before the Court for partners (such as Philip Livingstone) is £352.50. Clients who pay fees above these levels in Royal Court cases are likely to be unable to recover fees paid at an hourly rate above those stated.
Compare our rates below. Philip Livingstone has been practising as an Advocate since 1991.

On certain matters such as wills, and property or business sales and purchases, we may be able to agree a fixed fee at the outset, so you will know what you have to pay. We will always make it clear that fixed fees depend upon the intended matter remaining relatively straightforward. If they become more complicated than originally envisaged, we may have to charge more. For example, we will produce “mirror image” wills for a married couple where their assets are left to each other and their children for £500 for two wills of real estate and two of personal estate, However, if there are numerous specific bequests to others, charitable donations, or other instructions requiring bespoke drafting, our fees will be higher. See our page on wills and probate for more details.
